Signs gambling may be causing harm
No checklist diagnoses a person, but it may be time to pause and seek support if you are:
- chasing losses or increasing stakes to recover money;
- hiding activity, spending or account statements;
- borrowing, selling needed items or using essential money;
- feeling anxious, irritable or unable to stop when planned;
- neglecting sleep, work, study or relationships;
- opening new accounts to bypass limits or self-exclusion; or
- treating expected gambling wins as income.
Boundaries to set before gambling
- Decide a hard loss limit. Use disposable entertainment money only; never rent, food, bills, debt or borrowed funds.
- Set a time limit. Use an external alarm and leave when it ends, regardless of wins or losses.
- Never chase. A previous loss is not evidence that the next outcome is more likely to win.
- Avoid impaired decisions. Do not gamble when underage, intoxicated, distressed, sleep-deprived or pressured.
- Reduce access. Use operator limits, self-exclusion, payment blocks and device blocking tools where available.
- Tell someone. A trusted person or counsellor can help make the boundary harder to reverse impulsively.
Skin gambling is still gambling
Virtual items can have market value and losses can be financially meaningful. Converting money into credits or skins can make spending feel less tangible, while volatile item prices add another risk. Steam, Valve, Facepunch and game publishers do not make a third-party gambling site safe by association.
